How to Plan a Website Hosting Move
Moving hosting means more than copying a website. A good plan identifies what the business uses today, tests the replacement and gives everyone a clear way to confirm the move worked.
Separate the domain, website and email
Your domain registration, DNS, website hosting and email can be managed by different providers. Start by identifying each account owner and the person who can approve changes. Moving the website does not necessarily require moving the domain or email.
Record the services attached to the domain, including subdomains, forms, customer tools and third-party verification records. A hosting change should preserve the connections your business still needs.
Define what is moving
List website files, databases, uploaded media, scheduled tasks and application requirements. A brochure site and a customer portal have different migration needs. Tell the new provider about logins, purchases, bookings and any information that changes throughout the day.
Agree on the scope of managed hosting. Ask who handles application updates, backups, restores, certificates and support, and which items are separate services. A low headline price is not a complete description of responsibility.
Test before switching traffic
Arrange a preview of the destination where possible. Check important pages, images, sign-in flows and form delivery. Test integrations in an appropriate test mode so the review does not create real orders or send messages to customers.
Compare the new site with the existing one and keep recoverable backups. If the site accepts changing data, plan how final changes will be synchronized and whether a short maintenance window is necessary.
Agree on a cutover and recovery plan
Decide who changes DNS, who verifies the site and what would cause the team to pause or roll back. Keep the previous hosting available until the checks and agreed observation period are complete.
After the change, verify HTTPS, key pages, forms and application workflows. Check business email separately if DNS changed. Seeing the new homepage is only one part of confirming a successful move.
Finish with a clear handover
Keep account ownership, renewal dates and support contacts in a place the business controls. Confirm backup coverage, restore responsibilities and how future changes will be requested.
